These etchings are the next phase in a process through which drawing was first used in response to life forms. The primary objective was to capture the essence of the moment - this intention evolved towards establishing permanence in the prints. Since the catalyst for the initial mark was motion the intent was to distill this in the etched line. In this process the initial sketch is first traced and then transferred onto a soft ground covered plate. The plate is then immersed in acid and so the line is permanently etched. The line which was once used to convey a shift in time is now engraved and can be reproduced.

The Cave series are acrylic & mixed media paintings on canvas completed between 2017- 18. Whilst the starting point for marks made on these canvases stems from sketches the evolution takes on different forms. Although the initial act involves close observation the sketches denote the space between representation and abstract thought. The marks and gestures in the sketches are the seeds from which the larger canvases evolve. In this series I was reworking shifts in the drawings and exploring the process of untangling in order to reform.

It’s the energy and rhythm of life forces in motion that drive the aesthetic of my work. Drawing in response to figures that are moving results in a first interpretation of the fleeting form. In this context the initial observation sparks the journey of the line across the surface as subject and minds eye connect. Since the natural form is something that is constantly evolving drawing is a vehicle to respond to that.

These prints were made using limestone lithography the images rendered with liquid tusche. There are only four in each edition due to the delicate nature of the wash.

The zen series consists of small black and white oil paintings based on contour sketches of monkeys. These lines are drawn as gestures in response to a moment in time. The emphasis is on that which is fleeting with line weaving through both tangible and liminal space. The experience of drawing here is not dissimilar to the zen meditation focus on the space between thoughts. The brevity in this depiction is due to remaining in the present whilst conveying that initial contact through first marks, there is always a sense of urgency involved.

Las Poverellas were originally ink sketches on newsprint which I tore around the edges and reworked on small canvases as collages exploring surface layer using decoupage. Las Poverellas is in reference to the Eliana Ferranti novel “ Days of Abandonment.” which describes societies rejection of women when they can no longer fulfill their expected roles.
These drawings were made during travels to Mexico,India and Spain. In both India and Mexico the cows were on the beach. There was a tranquility to these settings that can also be found in the landscapes of Constable and Turner so I referenced those in the background to make Pastoral Scenes.
